JUSTIN GLADNEY
Case Manager-Substance Use Disorder Program
Justin Gladney (he/him/his) is a substance use disorder case manager and a student mental health intern for Sunserve in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Justin predominantly works with the LGBTQ community in helping those with substance use challenges towards their recovery goals.
Justin is originally from Jonesboro, Arkansas, and was raised in Memphis, Tennessee. Growing up in the south, in a conservative state and coming a family full of Christian preachers, Justin stuggled with his racial and sexual identity. While he was working as an EMT/Paramedic in Arkansas, he discovered his passion for mental health and substance abuse. "Usually, when I arrived on the scene, we were at the end of a substance use problem because not all the time were we able to revive the person. One day I was like, instead of meeting people towards the end of the problem, what if I can make a bigger impact by meeting them at the start or in the middle of their substance use problem to prevent that final 911 call?" Justin later moved to Portland, Oregon, and graduated from Portland State University in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sexuality, Gender, and Queer Studies with a minor in psychology.
He is a current grad student working on his master's of social work, where he plans to be a therapist, focusing on serving the LGBTQ community in areas like substance abuse, mental health, & childhood sexual abuse. "My biggest goal is to be the representation for young Black queer boys that I was looking for when I was their age".
